Starting this weekend, you can carry a drink in this part of Wichita. Here are details

Visitors in Delano can walk around the neighborhood, alcoholic beverage in hand, starting Friday.

Visitors can take advantage of the common consumption area Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“Implementing common consumption isn’t just about being able to enjoy walking around Delano with a beverage,” Wichita City Council member Dalton Glasscock said. “It’s about creating a dynamic and walkable neighborhood and finding ways to draw patrons to the businesses of Delano.”

The year-long pilot would allow visitors to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating restaurants and bars along Douglas between McLean and Seneca, down south to Maple, and consume them outside of those establishments.

Signs were placed in the area to indicate where common consumption is allowed. Area businesses will also have signs outside their establishments indicating whether they’re participating in the pilot.

Only a handful of establishments currently have their licenses through the state and city to be part of the consumption area. More are in the process of receiving the license, according to Glasscock, who represents part of the area.

“Know that a few area businesses are still getting their license to participate,” he said. “Some restaurants and bars have already received their license and are ready to start serving.”

Participating businesses will use disposable cups with stickers for to-go beverages.
