Wichita to install more parking meters downtown. Here’s where

Many streets north of Waterman downtown soon will have paid parking meters installed.

The city will begin to place meters after Labor Day on many of the north-south streets downtown, as well as the remainder of Douglas Avenue and other east-west streets.

“Installation is expected to take several weeks,” a city news release said.

This phase of parking will include some 15-minute parking spots that are free for visitors. Some of those spots will be on South Topeka near the Kansas Leadership Center and the Hilton Garden Inn Wichita Downtown.

The city has already installed payment kiosks at many of the parking lots downtown and some city streets, including parts of Douglas, St. Francis and Emporia.

Visitors will a dollar an hour up to $5 a day in a parking lot or a dollar an hour up to $10 a day in a garage, after new parking equipment is installed. Monthly rates will be $35 a month in parking lots and $70 in garages. Payments can be made via phone or mobile app, and most meters will take card or coin payment.

The city’s private contractor, The Car Park, will enforce parking regulations Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Sundays are free.

Handicap-accessible and disabled veteran parking is free on streets but is paid on surface lots and in parking garages.

After this phase of implementation, the city will still have to install meters and kiosks on streets south of Waterman.
