Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly tested positive for COVID-19 a day after her second inauguration, her office announced Tuesday.

The 72-year-old governor is dealing with minor symptoms and self isolating after testing positive on the second day of her second term.

The days before Kelly’s positive test were filled with activity as she celebrated her inauguration with a ball Sunday night, a ceremony Monday and an executive order signing Tuesday morning.

Kelly’s office said it informed attendees of all three events and urged the individuals to get tested for COVID-19.

The positive test also forced the governor to delay her annual State of the State address, which was scheduled for Wednesday evening. Her speech laying out the 2023 agenda will now be held on Jan. 24.

Kelly said the governor remains working as she isolates and that her office still plans to release her budget proposals on Thursday as scheduled.

This is the first time Kelly has tested positive since the onset of the pandemic in 2020. The Democratic governor is fully vaccinated.
