New Amidon bridge will feature wider sidewalks, ‘aesthetic enhancement’
The city of Wichita partnered with JEO Consulting Group to design plans for the new Amidon Avenue Bridge at 18th Street North.
The existing structure, completed in 1964, has just one narrow sidewalk on the west side of the bridge. The JEO concept will include a 10-foot-wide “multi-use path” on the west side of the bridge and a six-foot-wide sidewalk to the east.
The city’s Design Council allotted additional funding for the bridge project “requiring a higher level of aesthetic enhancement beyond standard design guidelines.” According to city documents, local artist Daniel Gegan will be involved with the design of the lighting and handrail enhancements on the bridge.
