Fire quickly extinguished at Sedgwick County Courthouse

Sedgwick County officials are assessing the damage to the county courthouse after a small fire started on the fourth floor Saturday morning.

No one was injured in the fire, Sedgwick County Commission Chair Pete Meitzner said. There appeared to be smoke damage on the fourth floor and minor damage on the third floor, where the Sedgwick County Commission has its offices, he said.

The fourth floor houses the Family Law Self-Help Center and Family Law Courts.

A courthouse window was broken as part of the effort to extinguish the fire. The Sedgwick County Courthouse, 515 N. Main, is closed Monday for Martin Luther King, Jr., Day but will reopen as scheduled on Tuesday, Meitzner said.

Meitzner said the fire started around 9:45 a.m. on the fourth floor. About 25 employees were working Saturday in the 11-story courthouse.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the fire, Meitzner said.
