Coke or Pepsi? Wichita set to decide the eternal question for city golfers Tuesday

If you’re feeling a little dry while golfing at a Wichita public course, don’t ask for a Coke at the clubhouse.

You might better say “Pepsi, please.”

The City Council is expected to sign an exclusive agreement with Pepsi to supply all the soda pop for the city golf system for the next five years.

Non-alcoholic beverage sales are expected to run about $93,000 a year for the term of the contract, according to a city report.

“Based upon experience, qualifications, response to scope of services, pricing and sponsorship support, (city staff) recommends Pepsi Bottling Group to provide exclusive beverage services,” the staff report said.

Under the new contract, Pepsi will pay the city $15,000 a year, plus $1,000 a year in free product, plus provide the coolers and fountains to serve the beverages — a service the city values at $25,000.

Pepsi has provided non-alcoholic beverages to city courses since 2014, but City Hall recently sent out a request for proposals to see if they could get a better deal while providing “high quality product, consistent pricing, and excellent customer service.”

Pepsi won the Pepsi challenge, according to a city staff committee.

The measure is on the consent agenda, where actions deemed routine and noncontroversial are approved in bulk with a single vote.
