Information on implementing higher personal income tax rates coming soon

The Kansas Department of Revenue will soon release information to help businesses implement the new, higher personal income tax rates in Kansas.

Final information is not yet available, but the agency said Thursday that a new table with information about income withholding will be released to the public as soon as staff finish a review process.

The new table should provide guidance about how businesses should withhold income for employees.

The agency said individuals taxpayers should not need to adjust their personal exemptions.

The tax plan the Legislature forced into law earlier this week over Gov. Sam Brownback’s veto raises personal income tax rates retroactively to Jan. 1.

The new rates in 2017 for married couples filing jointly are: 2.9 percent for taxable income up to $30,000; 4.9 percent for income between $30,001 and $60,000; and 5.2 percent for income above $60,000.

The current rates are: 2.7 percent for taxable income up to $30,000 and 4.6 percent for income above $30,001.

Higher rates will go into effect in 2018. That year, rates will rise to 3.1 percent in the low bracket, 5.25 percent in the middle bracket, and 5.7 percent in the upper bracket.
