High stakes at ‘Demofest’ as elections approach

Kansas Democrats will gather in Wichita on Saturday for their annual “Demofest” convention, where they will approve a party platform and rally in support of Paul Davis and other statewide candidates.

The event runs all day and evening Saturday at the Drury Plaza Hotel Broadview. Davis and other Democratic candidates will hold a rally at 4 p.m.

Dakota Loomis, spokesman for the party, said this year’s convention has high stakes because Democrats appear to be competitive in a number of statewide elections, including the governor’s race, where Davis leads Gov. Sam Brownback in several early polls.

“I think Demofest will be a jumping-off point for a lot of people for the final months of the campaign, so it will be to rally our supporters to get out to do the work we need to do to get people like Paul Davis and (secretary of state candidate) Jean Schodorf over the finish line in November,” Loomis said.

“We want to talk about what’s going on here in Kansas,” he said. “We want to talk about how we can make Kansas a better place for families.”
