Two Powerball players in California won $555,503 each, just missing the $204 million jackpot, lottery officials say.

The tickets matched five winning numbers but not the Powerball in the drawing Monday, July 7, the California Lottery said.

California adjusts lottery prizes based on the number of tickets sold and number of winners.

The lucky tickets were sold at Seafood City Supermarket in Santa Clarita, about a 35-mile drive northwest from Los Angeles, and a Chevron gas station in Orange, about a 30-mile drive southeast from Los Angeles, lottery officials said.

A player in Kentucky won $1 million, lottery officials said.

Nobody won the grand prize, which rises to an estimated $216 million, with a cash value of about $98.4 million, for the next drawing Wednesday, July 9, the site said.

The winning numbers were 33, 35, 58, 61 and 69, with a Powerball of 25. The Power Play multiplier was 5x.

More than 350,000 other Powerball tickets sold in the United States also won prizes ranging from $4 to $250,000, the lottery said.

The Powerball jackpot was last won May 31, when a California player hit the $204.5 million grand prize.

What to know about Powerball

To score a jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.

The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.

Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
