A man from Canada was arrested in connection with the 2023 slaying of an Oregon woman, police said.

Cole Nikolaus Sinclair, 25, was provisionally arrested in Canada in December in connection with Evelyn Jeanette Weaver’s death, the Bend Police Department said in a May 8 news release.

He “remains detained in Canada at this time pending the outcome of his extradition proceedings,” police said.

Sinclair is a Canadian citizen, according to police, who didn’t say where in Canada he’s from.

CBC News reported that he’s from Whitehorse, which is in northern Canada.

McClatchy News reached out to Sinclair’s attorneys May 9 and was awaiting a response.

Police said “there is no indication” that Sinclair knew Weaver, who was 28 when she was discovered dead at home in Bend in July 2023.

They didn’t say how Weaver was killed or how they linked Sinclair to her slaying.

In the news release, police said legal restrictions prevent them from releasing more information.

Days after Weaver was found, her SUV was discovered about 140 miles south in Klamath Falls, the Klamath Falls Police Department said in a Facebook post at the time.

In comments to Central Oregon Daily News, a friend described Weaver as “singlehandedly the smartest person I know, and also the funniest.”

Ayla Burnett added that Weaver was a “woman in science” who “loved rock and roll” and was “an absolute feminist punk rocker through and through,” the outlet reported.

Weaver’s LinkedIn profile said she earned a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Oregon and worked as a scientist in Bend.

Dana Weaver, the mother of Evelyn Weaver, told KTVZ that she’s grateful for police and prosecutors’ “continuous efforts” in her daughter’s case, and she’s “praying for a successful extradition.”

Bend is about a 165-mile drive southeast from Portland.
