84-year-old struck and killed leaving grandchild’s Christmas concert, Ohio reports say
An 84-year-old woman was hit and killed by an accused hit-and-run driver after attending her grandchild’s Christmas concert, according to Ohio authorities and news reports.
The fatal collision happened at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, outside St. Barnabas Catholic School in Northfield Center Township, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the driver of a blue Ford Explorer fled the area after striking the woman, who was aided by witnesses before first responders arrived.
The woman, from nearby Boston Heights, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff. She has not been publicly identified as of Dec. 19.
In an update, the sheriff’s office said the driver turned himself in. The 35-year-old man was charged with leaving the scene of a crash, and more charges are possible, WEWS reported.
Officials said the victim had been at the school to watch her granddaughter’s Christmas concert, according to WEWS and WKYC.
“We ask for your prayers for the entire family during this profoundly difficult time,” Rev. James Kulway, St. Barnabas’ pastor, said in a statement to WKYC. “May the God of all goodness bring them comfort and peace in the face of such sorrow.”
Northfield Center Township is about a 25-mile drive southeast from Cleveland.
