Man loses control during 110 mph race and kills other driver on I-75, Florida cops say
A 20-year-old racing another car at 110 mph along Interstate 75 lost control and collided with the other driver, killing him, Florida authorities said.
Now, Mason Jeter has been convicted of vehicular homicide, Florida Highway Patrol said Oct. 31.
McClatchy News reached out to his attorney for comment Oct. 31 and didn’t immediately receive a response.
At about 7:30 a.m Sept. 21, 2023, Jeter was behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang racing a 37-year-old man driving a Dodge Challenger on I-75 south in Charlotte County, investigators said.
But Jeter’s car had bald tires, and he lost control, veering into the other lane and partly cutting off the other man’s car, according to FHP.
The back of the Mustang hit the front of the Challenger, causing both cars to run off the road and hit trees, investigators said. Jeter was seriously injured when his car rolled, while the driver of the Challenger died on the scene, investigators said.
Both men were from Arcadia in DeSoto County. FHP didn’t share their relationship.
Jeter, now 21, was charged with vehicular homicide nearly three months after the crash, and a jury found him guilty Oct. 30, Charlotte County records show.
He’s scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 2.
Charlotte County is in southwest Florida, about a 65-mile drive north from Naples.
