A Powerball player is set to get richer in North Carolina — but might not know it yet.

The player bought a ticket that matched all but one number picked in the Aug. 14 drawing, making it worth $50,000, results show.

The winning numbers: white balls 8-9-23-29-62, with red Powerball 13.

The lucky ticket matched four of the white balls and the red ball to win big. It was sold at the Friendly Way store in Rocky Mount, a roughly 60-mile drive northeast from Raleigh, the N.C. Education Lottery wrote on social media and in an email to McClatchy News.

Though the player has a lot to celebrate, the person was one number from an even bigger jackpot prize. No one hit the jackpot, which stood at an estimated $20 million the night of the drawing, according to the Powerball website.

As of 10:20 a.m. Aug. 15, the $50,000 winner hadn’t claimed their prize. Lucky ticket holders in North Carolina have about six months to cash in, according to drawing rules.

“Don’t forget to check your numbers!” lottery officials wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

What to know about Powerball

To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.

The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.

Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
