Ski biker plows into daughter and dad skiing together, then takes off, Colorado cops say
A father from California was critically injured when a man riding a ski bike plowed into him and his daughter as they skied together in Colorado, officials say.
The dad and daughter were exiting the ski run at the Keystone Ski Resort on Tuesday, Jan. 2, when the ski biker came up from behind them and ran into them, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Facebook.
The ski biker hit the daughter first, then collided with the father who was just ahead of her, deputies said. She fell to the ground and got hurt, and was later treated and released from a hospital.
Her father was seriously injured and is in critical condition at a hospital near Denver, deputies said.
The ski biker took off after the “catastrophic collision,” and the sheriff’s office is investigating it as a criminal incident, officials said. Because he didn’t stop to identify himself or get help, deputies say there is no physical description of the man, his clothing or the ski bike he was riding.
Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said in the release that state law specifically requires any skier involved in a collision with another skier to give their name and address to either an employee at the ski area or someone from ski patrol.
Someone can bypass that requirement only to seek aid for someone injured in the collision, “neither of which occurred in this instance,” FitzSimons said.
Deputies reminded skiers to “always practice safe snow activity habits and to be aware of the risks associated with these activities.”
Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has information about it should contact the Summit County 911 Center at 970-668-8600.
