After a journey that took him from Florida to Tennessee and back again, Stanley the dog is looking for a forever home — again.

Stanley was one of the first rescues at the Cape Coral Animal Shelter when it opened in 2020, according to a Facebook post from Bob Sheeler, a volunteer there.

Sheeler said he often walked Stanley during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, Sheeler is also driving for Stanley.

An animal rescuer found Stanley in Tennessee, seemingly abandoned, NBC2 reported. His microchip directed the person who found him to the Cape Coral shelter, according to Sheeler.

Stanley briefly lived with a rescuer in Nashville with other dogs before the handoff back to the Cape Coral shelter, Liz McCauley, executive director of the shelter, told McClatchy News in an email.

“He’s a very sweet dog,” McCauley said, adding that he’s “perfect.”

Sheeler fueled up with Dunkin’ and trekked up to Tifton, Georgia, he said in his Sept. 28 post. He got Stanley, who “loves car rides,” and drove five-and-a-half hours back to Cape Coral, arriving at midnight and then got Stanley settled in again.

“People—he loves them! All people, including kids,” McCauley said when describing the dog’s personality. “He’s very strong and pulls when he wants to go somewhere, but he listens well and is very smart.”

Stanley’s profile on the shelter’s website describes him as “really a very good boy.” He’s between 3-5 years old with a “little nubby tail.”

“I’m always smiling because I know there is a family out there who will appreciate me for the big lug that I am,” Stanley is quoted as saying in his online adoption profile.

For a while, Stanley was the shelter’s longest resident, back in 2020. After 101 days, he was adopted, the shelter announced in July 2020. He’ll now go through the process again, but this stay might be shorter, according to McCauley.

She told McClatchy News that people have expressed “great interest” in Stanley since he’s been back at the shelter.

“Fingers crossed he will find a forever home soon,” McCauley said.

Cape Coral is about 10 miles southwest of Fort Myers, Florida.
