Wolf pack chases hundreds of elk in Yellowstone. Overhead video shows intense moment
Video shows the intense moment a pack of wolves chases down a herd of more than 300 elk in Yellowstone National Park.
The video follows the elk herd as it races away from wolves trailing behind it. Some of the wolves start to close in on individual elk as the rest of the herd thunders over a hill toward safety.
It ends with a rare victory for the wolves — unfortunately for one of the elk, tour guide Michael Sypniewski said in an Oct. 5 video of the moment on Instagram.
“Sitting alone atop a rocky ridge, I watched a scene unfold that I am not sure I will ever see again. A pack of 20 or more wolves in pursuit of a herd of 300+ elk,” he said in the post. “This chase, unlike many for wolves, ended in success as they were able to bring down a young cow elk.”
Many comments said how amazing it was to see the hunt from that perspective — hard as it might be to watch.
“This is an amazing video!” someone said, adding: “I know that it’s a part of the circle of life but I just can’t stand when they capture one of the little critters.”
“I mean, thrilling and absolutely tragic simultaneously?” someone else commented.
Others simply said it was stunning to see the hunt so clearly.
“Such a good hunt!” one person wrote. “I can’t believe we got to witness that.”
