35-year-old man accused in hit-and-run ATV crash that killed 2 kids, California cops say

An Apple Valley man accused of fleeing an ATV collision July 2 that killed two children surrendered Tuesday, July 12, the California Highway Patrol told news outlets.

Edgar Ivan Galindo Diaz, 35, turned himself in at the Victorville CHP office after a court issued a warrant for his arrest, the Daily Press reported.

Galindo Diaz faces a charge of hit and run resulting in death or injury, CHP officers told the publication.

Jacob Martinez, 12, and friend Christina Bird, 11, were riding an ATV at 9 p.m. July 2 while on a family campout for the Fourth of July weekend when they were hit by a UTV, McClatchy News reported.

The UTV rider briefly stopped, then turned off his vehicle lights and drove slowly away, officials said. A passerby found the two children.

Jacob died at the scene and Christina died in a hospital July 6.

Investigators found the 2021 Polaris RZR UTV believed to be involved in the crash at Galindo Diaz’s home on July 7, KABC reported.

An ATV is an all-terrain vehicle and a UTV is a utility-terrain vehicle.
