Teen swimming with family in river drowns after current pulls him under, NC cops say
A 13-year-old boy died after a current pulled him under a North Carolina river, officials said.
The Asheville-area teenager was swimming with his family when he went missing in the water on Sunday, May 22, according to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said it happened on a river near Bat Cave and Chimney Rock in Western North Carolina, roughly 20 miles southeast of the mountain tourist destination of Asheville.
Firefighters and divers responded to the scene, and crews later found the teen’s body, deputies wrote in an alert posted online.
The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for additional information on May 24.
