Video shows out of control basket at top of tower in Oklahoma City
Two window washers were in a lift basket at the top of Oklahoma’s tallest building when it began swinging wildly out of control, the Oklahoma City Fire Department tweeted.
Video from the fire department — taken from the ground — shows the basket swinging at about 8 a.m. Wednesday as firefighters tried to get it under control.
The firefighters were called to Devon Tower when a caller reported that the basket was swinging at about 7:50 a.m., the Oklahoman reported.
When firefighters got to the top of the skyscraper, “the lift was swinging and struck parts of the building, breaking glass,” the newspaper reported. “Two men stood upright, holding on to the sides of the lift as it moved back and forth.”
At 8:25 a.m., the fire department tweeted that the basket was secured and that firefighters were “working to get the two window washers out of the basket.” At that point, it wasn’t known if they were injured.
About 25 minutes later, the two window washers were rescued, according to a tweet.
Both men were “apparently injured,” the Oklahoman reported, and one had a “possible head injury.”
Firefighters said the basket “malfunctioned” before it began swinging, the newspaper reported.
The Devon Energy Center building is about 850 feet tall and 50 stories high, according to its website. It is the 10th tallest building west of the Mississippi River.
