Throughout the summer, the Texas heat is unrelenting and unforgiving, giving residents plenty to complain about. And Texans without air-conditioning have even more to bemoan.

95-year-old Fort Worth resident Julius Hatley is one of those in Texas without air conditioning. Before he got his new air conditioning unit, Hatley sat on his porch in the shade to keep himself cool, according to CBS.

Last Thursday, Hatley called the Fort Worth Police Department to report his broken air conditioner, covered in sweat, CBS reports.

Fort Worth Officers William Margolis and Christopher Weir made their way to Hatley’s residence after responding to some more urgent 911 calls. By the time they got to his house at about 8:30 a.m., his house was between 85 and 90 degrees, according to CBS Dallas.

Margolis and Weir decided to go to Home Depot to buy Hatley a brand new air conditioning unit – using their own money. The officers asked Home Depot employees to help them find a good air conditioning unit and explained Hatley’s situation, according to CBS.

Home Depot managers and employees were so touched by the officers’ gesture that they rounded up $150 of their own money to help with the cause, according to a Facebook post from Weir’s wife.

“That’s what being an officer is about,” Weir wrote in the post.

The officers’ act of kindness isn’t stopping there. Weir’s wife, Jennifer, told CBS News that a Texas company came forward to replace his central air system for free. They are also working on replacing his windows and getting his house repainted.
