Powell Jewelry to close in Derby to focus attention on NewMarket Square store

WICHITA — Another NewMarket Square business is making some changes.

Daniel Hernandez of Powell Jewelry says he wants to focus solely on his NewMarket store, so he's closing his Derby store.

"We just think if we can capitalize on what's already here, we'll be in better shape than trying . . . to split the attention between two stores," he says.

The Derby store, which is at the Bristol Square shopping center, will close at the end of this month at the latest. Hernandez says the sale is going well, so the store may close earlier.

He says there's "nothing wrong with Derby. Derby's a great location. Good store."

Volume was flat there, though, and Hernandez figures he may as well cut the double expenses.

Currently, the NewMarket Powell Jewelry is in 1,200 square feet. Hernandez says in the future he might prefer to expand to about 2,200 square feet.

"We're not sure if there's even a possibility there, but we'd like to," he says. "There's just so much growth in the area."
