This future Shocker won’t have to worry about tuition, fees
Oscar Clark, a graduate of Wichita East High School, was named the Linwood Sexton Scholarship winner for the 2016-17 academic year at Wichita State University, WSU officials announced Thursday.
The scholarship is a four-year, full-ride package including tuition and fees, on-campus housing and a book stipend.
Clark, a graduate of the International Baccalaureate program at East, participated in the school’s marching band, anime club and sign language club and was a tutor for math and physics. Outside of school, he volunteered for organizations such as the Kansas Food Bank.
Clark plans to major in physics.
The scholarship was established in 2000 to honor Linwood Sexton, a football player for the University of Wichita, a member of the Shocker Sports Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.
Sexton, the father of Eric Sexton, WSU’s vice president of student affairs, has worked to advocate for equal opportunity and social justice and promote understanding among people of different racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds, the university said in a news release.
Scholarship applicants must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate financial need. All students are eligible to apply but preference is given to minority students majoring in business or education.
