Wichita magnet school applications available online
If you have a child in Wichita public schools – or will next fall – it’s already time to start thinking about magnet options and completing applications.
Applications for magnet schools for the 2015-16 school year are available online on the magnet program’s website, www.magnet.usd259.org. Parents also can fill out a paper application. Forms can be printed from the magnet site and are available in all school offices and at the Alvin Morris Administrative Center, 201 N. Water.
Families also should mark their calendars for the district’s annual Choices Fair, which is 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Century II Exhibition Hall. The event is free.
The Wichita district offers technology, foreign language, fine arts and traditional magnet schools, among others. It also has alternative schools, career development schools and East High’s International Baccalaureate program, an internationally accredited college-preparatory curriculum.
The deadline to apply for most magnet schools is Feb. 13.
The application for the East High IB program is earlier. Student testing dates for that program are Jan. 17 and 24; the application deadline is Jan. 22. Testing is by appointment only, and the application includes teachers recommendations and other paperwork, some due earlier. For more information, go to http://ib.east.usd259.org or call the East High IB office, 316-973-7289.
Families wanting to know more about the IB program are urged to attend one of three upcoming information sessions designed for eighth-grade students and their parents. The sessions are 6 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Gordon Parks Academy, 2201 E. 25th North; Wednesday at Coleman Middle School, 1544 N. Governeour; and Dec. 9 at East High, 2301 E. Douglas.
