Valley Center High School student, 18, arrested for making threat against school

An 18-year-old Valley Center High School student was arrested late Thursday after making a threat against the staff and student body of the school, law enforcement officials said Friday.

Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. Lin Dehning said the Sheriff’s Office received information about the threat about 11 p.m. Thursday. Investigators immediately investigated the validity of the threat.

The male student, who has not been identified, was arrested and booked for criminal threats but has not been formally charged, Dehning said in an e-mail to media Friday.

Earlier on Friday, Valley Center superintendent Cory Gibson sent an e-mail to employees and parents informing them about the threat and the arrest.

Additional safety measures were to be put in place at the high school Friday, “including increased law enforcement presence,” Gibson said in the e-mail.

“We are thankful the report was made and that the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department began investigating immediately,” he said.

This is the second time this week a Wichita-area student has been arrested for threatening students or staff members.

On Monday, a 13-year-old girl was arrested after she made threats via e-mail and social media to “shoot up” Stucky Middle School in Wichita. Those threats were sent last week, Wichita police said. Officers tracked down the source of the threats and arrested the girl early Monday morning.

The Stucky student “is suspended and will face disciplinary consequences” pending the outcome of the police investigation, district spokeswoman Susan Arensman said Friday.
