Ahead of a $615 million November bond issue, leaders with Wichita Public Schools are hosting a series of open houses at district schools.

Tours will be weekly on Tuesdays starting June 16. The aim is to highlight building needs and share information about the bond issue, a press release from the district said. Facility deterioration and deferred maintenance were significant drivers for putting the proposed bond issue on the general election ballot, with more than $474 million budgeted across two questions in the proposal for rebuilding, preserving and renovating buildings.

“The Open Houses will be held at a variety of school buildings across the district and will showcase the challenges we face in our older buildings and highlight the opportunities newer facilities will provide,” the release said.

Tours will be from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at these schools:

  • June 16 at Truesdell Middle School, 2464 S. Glenn.
  • June 23 at Christa McAuliffe Academy, 2055 S. 143rd St. East.
  • June 30 at Coleman Environmental Magnet Middle School, 1544 N. Governeour.
  • July 7 at Black Traditional Magnet Elementary School, 1045 N. High.
  • July 14 at Northwest High School, 1220 N. Tyler.
  • July 21 at Adams Elementary School, 1002 Oliver.
  • July 28 at Irving Elementary, 1642 N. Market.
  • August 4 at Future Ready Manufacturing Center at North High School, 1435 N. Waco.

If both parts of the two-question bond are approved by voters, Truesdell, Black, Coleman and Adams would all be rebuilt and Irving would move to the current Horace Mann Dual Language Magnet building.

Attendees are encouraged to RSVP and can do so at wpsbond.org/community-involvement. Additional information from the district about the upcoming bond issue can be found at https://wpsbond.usd259.org/.
