Two students at Maize High School were arrested Thursday after a gun was discovered in a backpack.

Multiple students reported a possible firearm to school staff. Maize High administrators and Maize police officers were then able to find the firearm in a backpack on school property and confiscate it, USD 266’s Executive Director of Communications Lori O’Toole Buselt said.

“Everyone is safe,” O’Toole Buselt said in a statement. “We appreciate the quick action of those involved.”

The district confirmed two students were arrested in connection with the incident.

Maize sent a district-wide email to parents outlining the situation and providing advice. One tip, the district said, is “to say something if you see something and to report any safety concerns immediately.”

“We appreciate our community’s diligence and dedication to safety and using the resources available to report suspicious activity,” O’Toole Buselt said.
