Wichita Public Schools are back — and still hiring. See what the positions pay
Wichita Public Schools have returned for the 2025-26 school year, but many are still trying to fill vacancies.
In an Aug. 13 school district press conference, Superintendent Kelly Bielefeld said the district is starting with less than 70 teaching openings, which is fewer unfilled roles than in years past.
“That tracks with the trends we’ve been seeing both locally and across the state, with the continued need for special education teachers in particular,” he said. “But for us, these are pretty good numbers to start the year.”
Looking at USD 259’s job openings, there are 10 high school teaching jobs available, 13 elementary positions and 14 middle school roles. Special education has 28 open positions, according to the district’s job openings page.
In addition to teaching positions, Bielefeld also highlighted substitute teachers, paras and jobs in nutrition services.
To help, the district is hosting a guest job fair Wednesday, Aug. 20 to fill vacant guest positions in the district, which include guest teachers, guest paras, guest nurses and more. The district is holding the fair from 2 to 6 p.m. at the administrative center at 903 S. Edgemoor.
