Want to join USD 259’s financial oversight committee? Here’s how

Wichita Public Schools is looking for community members to join its financial oversight committee.

The school district announced the creation of the committee after its failed $450 million bond issue vote earlier this year.

The district is likely to face significant financial challenges in the near future with its current bond issue falling off of the tax rolls in 2029.

The committee will not focus exclusively on the bond issue, but the district’s budget as a whole, revenue streams and facilities needs.

“While the committee’s first priority will be identifying short-term and long-term funding solutions for school facilities, its broader mission is to advise district leadership and the Board of Education on financial strategies that promote fiscal responsibility and sustainability,” the district website reads.

People interested in joining the committee would have to apply through the school district.

It’s looking for community members with experiences in finance, construction, education, advocacy, and business or non-profit experience. It’s also encouraging USD 259 students, parents and school administrators to apply.

Once selected, members of the financial oversight committee would evaluate the district’s finances and budget, look at short and long-term funding solutions and make financial recommendations.

The committee’s first meeting is scheduled for April 24. Other meetings are scheduled for May 22 and June 19.
