A plan to raise the price of school lunches in the Wichita school district will be considered by the school board on Monday evening.

If approved, elementary students’ lunches would increase from $2.60 to $2.70, middle-schoolers’ lunches would increase $2.75 to $2.85 and high school students’ rates would climb from $2.90 to $3.00.

According to the school district, the cost of food and other lunch supplies has increased by approximately 10% in the past year.

The Keep Kids Fed Act of 2022, which provided additional funding for child nutrition operators during supply chain disruption and labor shortages, is set to expire on June 30.

USD 259 will continue to provide free breakfast for all students, regardless of household size and income, for the 2023-2024 school year.

Pricing for parents of students who participate in the district’s meal program will also increase if the measure is approved — from $4.35 to $4.80 for breakfast and from $2.50 to $2.70 for lunch.

The school board will meet at 6 p.m. in the North High School lecture hall.
