Memorial service set for Sunday for Joyce Cavarozzi, retired WSU theater professor
A memorial service for Joyce Cavarozzi, who was heavily involved in the Wichita theater scene for more than 40 years, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Crown Uptown Theatre, 3207 E. Douglas.
Ms. Cavarozzi, 88, died Sept. 28.
She began teaching at Wichita State in 1965, retiring in 2006. She directed and designed costumes for hundreds of WSU productions, and performed on stage, television and several movies including “The Attic” and “Twister.”
At WSU, she was president of the faculty senate and received the President’s Award for Distinguished Service. In addition, she was inducted into the Mary Jean Teall Theatre Hall of Fame and is member of the WSU Foundation Society of 1895.
However, her influence has reached far beyond Wichita. She received the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Gold Medallion for Excellence in Theatre and the Meritorious Achievement Award in costume design. Her work with the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, including a term as Regional Chair, made the University Theatre recognized nationally.
