Maize Middle School students held at school as safety precaution

Maize Middle School students who walk home from school were held after school for about 40 minutes Monday as a precaution after an incident at a nearby house, officials said.

Police asked for the walking students to be held as a precaution while they searched for a suspect linked to a domestic violence incident.

“The students who walk home from school, we’re holding them until we get an ‘all clear’ or a parent or guardian picks them up,” Maize school spokeswoman Lori O’Toole Buselt said before the students were allowed to go home shortly before 3:30 p.m.

The domestic violence incident occurred at a house near the school building at 4600 N. Maize Road. Only about 10 students who walk home were still at the school when the lockdown was lifted, Buselt said.

Classes at the middle school let out for the day at 2:30 p.m.
