Wichita school to honor former security officer and coach
A gymnasium at Greiffenstein Wells Alternative School in Wichita will be dedicated to a former security guard who died earlier this year, district officials said.
Amos Alford, a long-time assistant basketball coach at East High School, died in April after suffering a heart attack following a game of basketball over his lunch break.
In addition to coaching at East, Alford worked as a security officer at Greiffenstein Wells Alternative School.
On Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Greiffenstein Wells will host a ceremony dedicating the school’s gym in honor of Alford. The ceremony will be held at the school, 1221 E. Galena in Wichita.
Alford, 51, had been a coach on East High’s bench for more than 15 years, winning state championships in 2002 and 2005 under Ron Allen and in 2015 under Joe Jackson.
