Wichita public school athletes will compete in the classroom this year as well as on the athletic field.

The district on Monday plans to announce the Superintendent’s Challenge, a contest recognizing teams with the highest overall grade point average in each sport.

Twenty sports and activities will be eligible for the contest, including dance and cheer.

During the school year, the district will award traveling trophies to teams with the highest GPA, officials said. At year’s end, a “GPA Team Cup” will be presented to the school whose athletes post the highest overall GPA.

The Wichita district does not have minimum GPA requirements for student athletes. According to the Kansas State High School Activities Association, a student is eligible to participate if he or she passed at least five subjects in the previous semester.
