Maize superintendent is moving to district in Kansas City

Maize superintendent Doug Powers is going to the Turner school district in Kansas City, Kan.

Powers, who submitted his resignation to Maize leaders Thursday, has been named assistant superintendent for business and public relations at Turner schools, according to Turner district officials.

Jason Dandoy, who earlier this year was named superintendent of Turner schools, said the Turner school board voted Tuesday to name Powers to the position.

He will replace Dandoy, who currently holds the assistant superintendent post. Both men will begin their new jobs July 1.

“We’re really excited to have him aboard,” Dandoy said Friday. “I think he’ll bring an excellent perspective and he’ll be a great addition to our district.”

The Turner district, in Wyandotte County, has about 4,000 students. It shares a border with the Bonner Springs, Shawnee Mission and Kansas City, Kan., school districts.

According to the district’s website, Turner is a diverse community, where about 11 percent of students are black and 22 percent are Hispanic. More than 60 percent of Turner’s students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Powers, 46, has served as superintendent of Maize schools since 2009. Prior to that he was superintendent of the Marysville school district, executive director of education services for the De Soto district and principal at Parsons Elementary School.
