Kansans who financed cars through Credit Acceptance Corp. could see $250 credits

Kansans who financed their vehicles through Michigan-based Credit Acceptance Corp. could soon see a $250 credit to their accounts.

Attorney General Derek Schmidt said Friday that he and district attorneys from Sedgwick and Johnson counties entered into a joint settlement with the auto financer that will result in account credits for about 2,100 customers. Qualifying customers would have signed Credit Acceptance Corp. contracts when buying vehicles from local car dealerships between November 2012 and December 2015.

The problem with the contracts, Schmidt said by e-mail, is a warranty disclaimer that violates the Kansas Consumer Protection Act. The company, meanwhile, claims it’s an inadvertent error, he said.
