Eight-hour standoff in Valley Center ends
An eight-hour police standoff in Valley Center ended at 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning, Valley Center police said.
The standoff started after a father and 24-year-old son got into an altercation in their home, near Ford and Meridian. The son threatened to harm his father and himself, so the mother called 911 around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, said Sgt. Lloyd Newman of the Valley Center Police Department.
Newman said dispatchers told the mother and father to get out of the house. The two did, and when officers arrived, the 24-year-old would not leave the home.
Newman said the man then threatened to shoot police. He said the 24-year-old had at least one rifle and at least one pistol.
Valley Center police called in the Sedgwick County and Wichita Police Department SWAT team and also received backup from the Park City Police Department.
At around 2:30 a.m., Newman said, the man peacefully came out of the home following talks with negotiators.
Newman said the man was taken to a hospital for examination and that the incident was likely fueled by alcohol. He said the man could face charges of domestic violence, battery and criminal threat, and possibly criminal damage because of rounds fired inside the home.
