A man called 911 early Saturday morning saying he was the target of gunfire after he said he asked another man to stop using racial slurs at a west Wichita restaurant, Wichita police say.

Sgt. Steve Yarberry said the 31-year-old man made the request but was shot at twice, possibly in retaliation, as he was driving away from the International House of Pancakes – IHOP – at 515 S. Ridge Road around 2:30 a.m. The restaurant is between Kellogg and Maple.

“One of the rounds struck the tailgate of his vehicle,” Yarberry said. The man was not hurt. He did not know the shooter, Yarberry said.

No one had been arrested in connection with the shooting as of Saturday, Yarberry said. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
