Violent-crime victims awarded more than $247,000 at June meeting

More than 200 victims of violent crimes in Kansas received a total of $247,148.84 in financial assistance from the Kansas Crime Victims Compensation Board during its monthly meeting Thursday.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said awards were granted in 75 new cases and additional money was paid in 138 previously submitted. The Kansas Crime Victims Compensation program, established in 1978, helps victims and their families pay for up to $25,000 in unforeseen expenses that arise from violent crimes, including funeral and counseling costs and lost wages. Convicted offenders provide funding for it.
