Wichita police officers in all four city bureaus issued 1,236 citations during the department’s grant-funded Click It or Ticket project, officials said.

The project was part of the national Click It or Ticket program, which lasted from May 23 through June 5, Wichita police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said. Wichita officers dedicated 344 patrol hours to the project, she said.

The citations included 43 speeding tickets, 19 child seat belt tickets, 15 youth (ages 14-17) seat belt tickets, 973 adult seat belt tickets, one DUI, three instances of texting while driving and 182 miscellaneous citations, Woodrow said.

“This was a very successful project that helps raise awareness nationally to remind drivers to always wear their seat belts,” Woodrow said.

The project was conducted during daylight hours and encompassed Memorial Day weekend. The penalty for the adult seat belt violations was a traffic citation with a payable fine, Woodrow said.

“With as many drivers on the road, especially during that long weekend ... (the number of citations) seems about right,” Woodrow said. “We just wish those numbers were a lot lower.”
