Police: Family friend accidentally shoots 8-year-old in leg

An 8-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the leg on Tuesday night by a friend of his father’s, authorities said.

Officers arrived at a home in the 700 block of South Fountain – south of Kellogg between Hillside and Oliver – around 9:15 p.m., Wichita police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said. They learned the boy had been shot in the leg and was being taken to the hospital by someone, she said.

A 36-year-old man who was a friend of the boy’s father told police he had accidentally shot the boy with a handgun, Woodrow said. The man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery with a firearm.

The boy is expected to make a full recovery, Woodrow said.
