Police respond to man with machete at Hydraulic and Waterman

Wichita police responded to a man at Waterman and Hydraulic who called 911 saying he had a machete and wanted to confront police late Tuesday afternoon.

When officers arrived, they found the man with a woman; the two went back into the residence, a six-unit complex, and have been talking with police since then, said Capt. Kevin Mears. As of 6:30 p.m., officers had evacuated the area, including the complex, and were negotiating with the man.

“At this point in time, he’s very upset and distraught,” Mears said.

The man had been charged before with at least one felony and one misdemeanor, Mears said. There was no evidence of other weapons.
