Extended chase ends in south Wichita after shots fired in Valley Center
A woman was arrested in south Wichita on Thursday following an extended police pursuit that began after shots were fired in downtown Valley Center, authorities said.
The shooting incident was reported at about 6 a.m. in the 100 block of South Main in Valley Center, a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher said. Two people fled from the scene, and the chase came south on I-135 into Wichita.
Speeds on I-135 reached or exceeded 90 miles an hour at times before the driver of the pickup exited on 13th Street and headed east. The suspect made a series of turns before heading south toward Kellogg.
Officers deployed spike strips south of Kellogg and reported all four tires were spiked. But the driver didn’t stop, heading west on Kellogg from Hillside and eventually turning on K-15 and heading south.
Concerned about the safety of other motorists, authorities activated the police helicopter and advised patrol cars to ease off on their speeds. Spike strips were deployed again on 63rd Street South.
Officers reported the pickup was “smoking” and “starting to fall apart,” and the woman behind the wheel finally stopped near Seneca and 55th Street South, where she was arrested at 6:36 a.m.
Authorities are looking for a man who apparently was dropped off in Park City, a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher said.
