Wichita police have arrested a 21-year-old man suspected of firing a BB gun near another man trying to sell pair of tennis shoes in a parking lot.

The 24-year-old victim wasn’t struck by the gun or injured.

Wichita police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow gave this account: The incident occurred at around 12:45 a.m. Thursday in a parking lot in the 2100 block of East 21st Street. The male victim had met three people, who were in a car, to sell a pair of tennis shoes to them. As the victim stood by the car and gave both shoes to the driver, he noticed a gun on the driver’s lap. The suspect began to drive away with the victim holding onto the car. The driver fired one shot, and the victim let go of the car.

Officers saw the suspect’s vehicle and took all three occupants into custody. They found a CO2-powered BB handgun and the stolen shoes in the suspect’s car. The BB gun is considered a firearm, and the incident is considered to be a felony crime, Woodrow said.

The 21-year-old driver and a passenger were arrested. A back-seat passenger was released after the investigation determined that he was not aware of the crime being carried out, Woodrow said.

Part of her advice is to choose a safe, well-illuminated spot for a transaction, including a police station.
