A 77-year-old Sedgwick County Jail inmate has died of what appears to be natural causes after being taken to a Wichita hospital, the Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
The inmate, Gerald V. Ashworth, originally from Augusta, “had a long history of serious medical issues and lately had been experiencing a multitude of dire medical conditions,” the office said in a statement. EMS took him to a hospital shortly after midnight Tuesday, and he was pronounced dead at 6:45 a.m, the office said.
Ashworth was booked into jail on July 24 on felony charges, the office said.
Last year, the office booked 27,270 people into jail, and there were no suicides and one natural death among the inmates, the office said. In 2013, the office recorded no suicides and five natural deaths of inmates.
