Sedgwick County District Court’s chief judge has been reappointed for two more years.

District Judge James Fleetwood has served as chief judge in the 18th Judicial District since 2009 and will continue in the role through Dec. 31, 2017, according to a news release from the state Office of Judicial Administration.

Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Lawton Nuss announced the appointment Thursday. It took effect Feb. 1.

Fleetwood, a long-term Kansan, graduated from Washburn University School of Law and worked in private and corporate law before his election to the bench in 1997. In addition to the standard duties of a judge, such as hearing cases, Fleetwood has general control over case assignments and supervises administrative and clerical functions of the court.

“The 18th judicial district has been a leader in technology development for the court and efficiency in effectively managing personnel,” Fleetwood said in a statement included in the news release. “I am grateful for the opportunity to continue directing these efforts.”
