Police say long-running feud ended in shooting on North Waco

A gang-related feud that has festered for three years culminated in a shooting Monday night in north Wichita, police said.

A 19-year-old man was shot in the hip at about 8 p.m. Monday in the 2600 block of North Waco, Wichita police Lt. James Espinoza said. That’s between Arkansas and Broadway north of 21st Street.

The shooting victim was in critical condition Tuesday morning, Espinoza said.

Police are looking for another 19-year-old man in connection with the shooting, Espinoza said. The two men initially clashed verbally in the 2400 block of North Jackson before parting, he said.

About an hour later, Espinoza said, the two bumped into each other again on Waco, a few blocks away. At that point, “one pulled out a gun and fired” a shot, he said.

He did not know what had fueled the long-running feud, Espinoza said.

The suspect fled the scene, but police know who he is. Investigators have questioned more than a dozen witnesses to the shooting, Espinoza said.
