Wichita police are seeking the public’s help in finding one or more people who are dropping rocks onto Kellogg from overhead walkways.

There have been at least five such incidents over the past three weeks. Police officials say one of them happened at about 5:15 a.m. Sunday near Kellogg and Washington. In that incident, two males each threw a rock at a semi and hit the windshield at eye level. The driver escaped injury.

“It’s very troubling,” Capt. Doug Nolte said Monday. “We want to make sure that nobody is injured. If this continues and someone’s not suspecting it, someone could overcorrect or panic and create an accident.”

In a Facebook post, police officials referenced four incidents that have occurred in the downtown area. A fifth incident not mentioned by Wichita police happened elsewhere in the city.

Shawnee Michelle said she was driving in the area of I-35 South and the Kansas Turnpike at about 3:30 a.m. on March 11 when someone threw a large rock at her vehicle. The rock bounced off the pavement and shattered the top of the windshield in her truck.

“It scared me to death,” Michelle said in an interview conducted via social media, adding that she’s still shaken by the incident.

Police are asking anyone with information about who might be throwing the rocks to call 316-268-4191.

“Hopefully, we’ll get some tips or a witness to call 911 so we can catch them,” Nolte said.
