911 call from Kwik Shop altercation consistent with story told to media
The 911 call that a Wichita State University student made during an alteraction at a Kwik Shop on Saturday morning is consistent with the story he told to the media on Monday.
During the call, which was released Thursday, Khondoker Usama explains to the 911 dispatcher that a motorcyclist provoked his friend, Christian Saldana, and then chanted “Trump, Trump” and “I won” as he left the Kwik Shop at 21st and Oliver.
“We were like taking gas and this guy was screaming around, and he was just engaging in conversation, and he provoked my friend,” Usama tells the dispatcher. “He came and started hitting my friend. And then I went to tell him, I told him to stop and he pushed me to my friend, and he again started again hitting my friend and then he left. And he was circling around while we are having this conversation. And he was chanting like, “Trump, Trump,” kind of like “I won,” and those kinds of things, and then he left.
The attack has been investigated as a potential hate crime, although so far the police have not called the motorcyclist in the attack a suspect.
Usama does not mention any racial epithets during the call to 911. In his statements to police, Usama said the attacker called him “brown trash” and had used racial epithets at another black man before he approached Usama and Saldana.
