Police release video of altercation involving Wichita State students (+video)

Wichita police on Wednesday released video of an altercation between a man on a motorcycle and two Wichita State University students outside a convenience store last weekend in what is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

One of the students, Khondonkor Usama, has said the biker confronted them after shouting racial slurs at someone who asked for gas money shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday at the Kwik Shop at 21st and Oliver.

Usama said the biker called his friend “brown trash” and the incident eventually escalated into a physical altercation. At one point, he said, the biker got back on his motorcycle and drove around them in circles, chanting “Trump! Trump! Trump!” and also said “We’ll make America great again!” before riding away.

Authorities stopped short of calling the man on the motorcycle a suspect on Wednesday. Investigators are seeking the public’s help in identifying the man on the motorcycle and also the person who was in the white van at the time of the clash, Lt. James Espinoza said.

“We want to get down to the facts...and to know what actually occurred out there,” Espinoza said.

Anyone who recognizes the motorcycle rider is being encouraged to call the investigations section at 316-268-4646.

Police have talked to several people who were in the parking lot at the time of the incident.
