Police: Man fatally run over by truck; shots fired near downtown Wichita (+video)
Police are still sorting out a homicide, a shooting and a vehicle crashing into a building – all of which happened early Sunday morning near downtown Wichita.
Wichita police Lt. Jason Stephens gave this account Monday of the events that unfolded in the 300 block of South Laura, which is southeast of Douglas and Washington:
Officers were called to a security alarm going off at a building in the 300 block of South Laura at about 4 a.m. When they arrived, they discovered that “the alarm had been caused by a vehicle driving through the front of the business,” Stephens said.
The occupants of the truck had fled the scene, but the officers discovered a pedestrian who had been run over by that vehicle and “pushed into the business,” he said.
The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died. He has been identified as Mandrell Washington, 35.
Officials also learned that a man with a gunshot wound walked into a hospital for treatment. Additional investigation revealed the 26-year-old victim had been attending an after-hours party at a business also in the 300 block of South Laura when he was shot.
An argument inside the building where the party was being held spilled out into the street, at which time numerous shots were fired.
Several shell casings were found in the street and the gun was found near the building crashed into by the truck.
Numerous people who had been at the party had left the scene by the time officers arrived, Stephens said.
“At this time, we don’t believe we have any additional victims,” he said.
It’s unclear whether the two people who were in the truck were fleeing the gunshots, he said.
“We have identified those individuals,” Stephens said of the two men in the truck, who are 18 and 19.
It is unknown whether Washington was struck intentionally and whether he was involved in the argument in some way, Stephens said, though he added that he thinks Washington was at the party prior to being struck and killed.
The building where the crash occurred and the former office where the party were held are on opposite ends of the same block, Stephens said. Police are still interviewing witnesses and examining evidence.
“We still need to evaluate the crime scene and determine what occurred,” he said.
